Many of our Pastors are involved in different aspects of community, and different organizations outside of their own church ministry. Every now and then word filters through to the district office about some of these organizations, and the work that are pastors are doing there. It's always inspiring to hear how people are spending their precious time, building the kingdom.
Pastor Don Cowie from Mosaic in Vancouver, is one of these pastors. He serves as the Chair for a non-profit organization called the Lazarus Community Society. The Lazarus Community Society has a goal to establish small community houses to provide safe, nurturing and structured home environments for vulnerable person. They desire to see vulnerable persons in our community living fulfilling, functional and healthy lives.
Don Cowie is committed to helping this vision and strategy as he serves on the board. He says, "Having a decent home is one of the most important factors for healthy living. For many people, particularly those who are marginalized, a supportive home environment is the difference between life and death."
The organization doesn't want to have institutional living environments, but focuses on having a high ratio of 'hosts' to 'vulnerable' residents. They focus on providing support, safety, and care rather than offering lots of programs and staffing. If they can create a healthy home environment, based on loving relationships, people are more likely to succeed, and thrive.
We are grateful for the work that Don Cowie is doing in this area, reaching out to people in our society that are often undervalued. Thank you for recognizing that these people are 'cherished by God'.

They are also currently seeking out a Managing Director. The Managing Director would work closely with the Board to further develop the vision and further define the operating parameters and business model. They are looking for someone with a passion for people, a commitment to the Christian faith, strong initiative, and preferably non-profit managerial experience. This is a voluntary position which could become a salaried position depending upon the development of financial partners and the expansion of the society. If housing for the vulnerable is something which deeply concerns you, and you are interested in the challenges and opportunities involved with this position, please send a letter of interest and/or resume to Don Cowie.
