The new payroll requirements for the Clergy Residence have been rolled out and our workers are being asked to fill out some paper work to be eligible avoid paying income tax on the Clergy Residence portion of their pay cheque.
By now all official workers (portable and non-portable) should have submitted their claim to CRA using T1213 Requesting To Reduce Tax Deductions at Source. If you have not submitted this request you should do so immediately. If you have not received an acceptance letter from CRA your take home pay will be reduced substantially beginning January 2010. The National Ministry Center has sent out a couple of very good detailed explanations of how this request works and how you should answer any additional requests for information. In most cases you may be asked to submit a T1223 Clergy Residence Deduction form to support your request for reducing taxes at source. Please also ensure that your church treasurer or payroll clerk is aware of these changes which take effect January 2010. Failure to comply with these changes may result in a financial penalty being assessed by CRA.
