You Have Asked!
Each month we will answer two of your burning questions about Plan to Protect.
The #1 purpose of the CPD Safety and Risk Management (S&RM) Policy, mandated by our DEXCOM and signed by our churches, is to provide the best protection possible for everyone in our church communities. The S&RM Guides as well as the Plan to Protect Manual are your key resources in carrying out these protection policies.
Pertinent Safety and Risk Management / Plan to Protect Questions you have asked:
Q.1 If a church organizes an evening for couples that provides babysitters who go to parent's home to look after kids are free, do the babysitters (mostly retired folks) require Plan to Protect approval even if their baby sitting services are not at the church?
A.1 YES!!!....IF the church arranges the child care.
However, if it is the parents who ask the babysitters to come to look after their own children, technically it is their responsibility. BUT, here's the catch, IF the church has recommended the child-care worker (even a faithful, retired church member) and an alleged inappropriate action or preventable accident takes place, and should this incident result in an allegation, then in a court of law the church will be most likely charged with negligence....a serious and costly charge!
Q.2. Are we liable if we make a list of babysitter names available to the congregation who have been through the Plan to Protect approvals?
A.2. Absolutely!
Proper and thorough screening is our #1 defense against abuse taking place in the first place and should there ever be an allegation it is our best defense in a court of law. Please let anyone who is resisting the screening process know that it is highly recommended by the RCMP that all volunteers who work in any way with the Vulnerable Sector be screened - which includes a Criminal Record Check. The Vulnerable Sector includes: children under the age of 19, disabled adults, and seniors.
